Note 256

This [protozoan cytoplasm] shows itself from  without, that is, non-electron-microscopically and non-fine-chemically, as a mixture of dispersions and hydro-sols of the most varied degrees of dispersion. The plasmic state of agregation is, strictly taken, neither liquid nor solid, but shows -- just like a solution of gelatine dependent on temperature and concentration -- all possible, perhaps also changing, transitions between solid and liquid (surely in one or another way also the sol-gel transformation, as also the swelling and unswelling, is functionally exploited ).
