Protoplasm is still held to be the substance to which life is bound. This is without doubt a fundamental truth, but it will be without value when not well-founded "upwards" (= metazoically, i.e. toward multicellular organisms) and "downwards" (= towards the origin of life). The "living slime droplet" carries the miracle as a semblance of glory, and because it is such nugatory a thing (apart from the microscopic and submicroscopic fine-structure) semblance of glory and miracle are especially conspicuous and mysterious.
