Still, the inclination exists to follow the science-historic way of thought and to imagine a carbon atom such that a chunk of graphite or a diamond crystal is divided up to the conceptual and experimentally founded atomic size.  This  carbon atom then actually is a graphite or diamond atom, or, with respect to carbondioxide (CO2), the atomic partner of oxygen [and not just a universal carbon atom, i.e. THE carbon atom.]
