To give an  illustration (!)  of this :  The electronic medium of the H2 molecule has in  this  case "the same" effect as does a quasi-infinite distance between the two protons [In the hydrogen molecule (H2) the two electrons compensate for the repulsion between the two positively charged nuclei brought closely together by the chemical bond. Without it, a great distance of the two nuclei from one another will have the same effect.]
