Note 286

That a given phenomenon is the more typical the more complex it is, is a common and remarkably false assumption. The typical is always something simple and elementary, and precisely as a result of this it often was overlooked, and one came to know the typical for the first time in complex phenomena, having it now to carry with it the attribute of complexity -- allegedly a sign of special purity -- as historical ballast for an apparently unlimited amount of time.
