Note 901

Because the chemical bond is realized  in  the condition of the constituents [The (new) condition or state of the constituents  is  the realization of the chemical bond], i.e. [the chemical bond] lacking true independency (although one formally may sometimes so operate with advantage), one may consider the qualitative valence-state of the atoms as the expression of the qualitative bond-feature (the imagined state of an isolated atom, a state of it closest to that when it is part of a particular molecule). This state [i.e. the state of the atoms in the molecule] is -- precisely taken -- different in different molecules. [Because different molecules are different Substances, Substances in the metaphysical sense, and the specific nature of the whole molecule determines the state of its atomic constituents.]. One may, however, contract this state into groups [i.e. take it generally] and distinguish it, f.i. as to overall quality, from the state of the  so-called  free atom (only realized in the inert gasses (Neon, Helium, etc.)). Now, it is our conviction that one may assume, for the, in the living organism (= in living protoplasm) bonded organogeneous atoms, a state including a common qualitative feature, present in all organismically bonded atoms, while not detectable in the overall group of the non-living compounds of the same organogeneous elements.
