In a certain sense it is a mere matter of view or definition whether one anchors into the special structures-in-them-selves the corresponding functional effect, or whether one takes these special structures to be a kind of physical mechanisms, fixing the life-constituting special substance and, therefore, making possible its effect and action. One may prefer the latter formulation, because it more strongly deviates from the usual views. [So the functions of the special constituent-structures now become the functions of the whole.]
