We here think of the classical definition  of  'man' :

homo est animal rationale
(man is a rational animal)

where  homo  is the definiendum ( = that what must be defined), and  animal rationale  the definiens ( = definition). Further, homo  is the species,   animal  is the genus, and  rationale  is the (specific) difference. The definition (definiens) is predicated of the definiendum.
