Note 85a

At first sight it seems to be that, upon investigating a branched snow crystal, we cannot deduce from the characteristics of the snow crystal's arm-still-attached-to-its-body (and also as regards the whole crystal itself for that matter) that it satisfies [2] of Definition 8 (X does not involve inherence). It could still be a concrete part of a Substance including the Accidents of that part (and by consequence not a part of a carrier-only). However, in the example we stipulate that we look to the crystal (and thus to any of its arms) as it being a historical individual. And then we indeed have something that is considered without replaceable accidents and thus satisfying [2] of Definition 8.
