We can also predicate :  'Socrates has the ability to laugh '  (here we predicate a proprium of an individual). This is allowed, because this predication can be the conclusion of a syllogism :

Socrates is a human being            (predicating a species of an individual)
A human being has the ability to laugh     (predicating a proprium of a species)
Therefore :
Socrates has the ability to laugh          (predicating a proprium of an individual).
