For example in  "Socrates is a friend of Plato's",  or in Latin :  "Socrates est Platonis amicus".
Here "Plato" stands in the genitive case (which is an oblique case-ending :  all cases, except the nominative case ( = first case), are oblique cases). In the above sentence "Socrates" stands in the nominative case.
